Abstract

Background: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI), more commonly known as heart attack, is a medical emergency and the leading cause of death for both men and women all over the world. There is a correlation between changes in serum uric acid and acute myocardial infarction.

Objectives: This study was undertaken to evaluate the changes in serum uric acid status in patients with acute myocardial infarction.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out at Mymensingh Medical College, involving 100 subjects (50 AMI patients as cases and 50 healthy individuals as controls) between July 2021 and June 2022.

Results: The mean ± SD values of serum uric acid were 7.91 ± 0.09 mg/dl in the case group and 3.68 ± 0.72 mg/dl in the control group, a highly significant difference (p<0.001).

Conclusion: A significant increase in serum uric acid level was observed in AMI patients, suggesting that estimation of serum uric acid may help clinicians in better management of AMI patients.
