With a humanitarian commitment to supporting abandoned and vulnerable elderly people and patients suffering from serious illnesses, President Abdul Hamid Medical College and Hospital has launched palliative care services for the first time in Outside Dhaka . The service was formally inaugurated at a ceremony held on the college premises on Tuesday. This initiative marks a new opportunity for compassionate and dignified healthcare for vulnerable, seriously ill, and elderly people who lack family support in the region.
The service was inaugurated by Professor Dr. Nizam Uddin Ahmed, a pioneer of palliative medicine in Bangladesh. He is the founding Chairman of the Department of Palliative Medicine at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and an adviser to the Palliative Care Society of Bangladesh.
The ceremony was chaired by Professor Dr. A. N. M. Naushad Khan, Principal of President Abdul Hamid Medical College. Special guests included Professor Dr. Syedur Rahman, Head of the Department of Medicine, and Professor Dr. A. S. M. Shahidullah, Vice-Principal of the college and Head of the Department of Community Medicine.
The primary goal of palliative care is to alleviate the suffering of patients with serious illnesses, ensure their emotional well-being, and provide dignified care during the final stages of life. This initiative is expected to play a particularly important role in supporting vulnerable elderly individuals who have no family members or relatives to care for them.
With a firm commitment to ensuring that no one is neglected at the end of life simply because they lack family support, President Abdul Hamid Medical College and Hospital has begun its journey in palliative care services—bringing compassionate, dignified, and humane healthcare to those who need it most.
