20th President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh
From a village in Kishoreganj to Bangabhaban
His Excellency President Md. Abdul Hamid was born in 1944 at Kamalpur village under Mithamoin Sub-District of Kishoreganj. He matriculated from Nikly GC High School and completed his IA and BA from Guru Dayal College in Kishoreganj, before graduating in Law from Dhaka Central Law College and joining the Kishoreganj Bar for legal practice.
A dedicated career in politics and social welfare followed — one that would eventually lead him from student politics in Kishoreganj to the highest office of the Republic.
From student politics to the Presidency of Bangladesh.
Joined the Chattra League, marking the start of a lifelong political career.
Took part in the political movement against the rule of President Gen. Ayub Khan and was jailed several times. He went on to serve as General Secretary of the College Student Union, President of Chatra League in Kishoreganj sub-division, and Vice President of Mymensingh District Chatra League.
Formally joined Bangladesh Awami League, deepening his role in national politics.
Became the youngest member elected to the Pakistan National Assembly, representing Mymensingh.
Went to India and led the independence struggle as Chairman of the Meghalaya recruiting camp in Agartala and Sub-Sector Commander of the Bangladesh Liberation Force (Mujib Bahini) for the Sunamganj and Kishoreganj sub-divisions. Following the victory on 16 December 1971, he played a key role repatriating Bengali refugees from camps in India’s Meghalaya state, returning home on 10 January 1972 to celebrate the homecoming of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Served as a member of the Constituent Assembly (1972) and was repeatedly elected MP for the National Parliament of Bangladesh from Bangladesh Awami League — in 1973, 1986, 1991, 1996, and 2001. He was Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament from 1996 to 2001, Speaker of the House from July to October 2001, and Deputy Leader of the Opposition from 2001 to 2006.
Returned as Speaker of the Parliament of Bangladesh.
Became Acting President of the Republic on 14 March 2013, and was elected the 20th President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh unopposed on 22 April 2013.
Re-elected to his current second term as President of Bangladesh.
