Abstract

Background: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a significant cardiovascular emergency, which continues to be a major cause of death globally. Uric acid is known to be associated with various cardiovascular risk factors and could vary in conditions of tissue ischemia. High serum uric acid levels have thus been suggested as a potential biomarker of cardiovascular stress and ischemic damage.

Objectives: The present study was undertaken to evaluate uric acid level in the serum of AMI patients and to find out whether there is any difference between the serum uric acid level of the AMI patients and apparently healthy controls.

Methods: It was a cross sectional analytical study conducted from July 2021 to June 2022 in the Department of Biochemistry, Mymensingh Medical College, with the Department of Cardiology, Mymensingh Medical College hospital, Bangladesh. There were 100 participants in total (50 patients with AMI and 50 healthy controls). Uric acid levels in the serum were determined by colorimetric method with commercial kit. The statistical analysis was carried out with SPSS for Windows software version 21.

Results: Patients with AMI had a mean ± SD serum uric acid concentration of 7.91 ± 0.09 mg/dL, while the controls had a serum uric acid concentration of 3.68 ± 0.72 mg/dL. The serum uric acid level of the AMI group showed significant difference when compared with the control group (p<0.001).

Conclusion:

The study showed a significantly higher serum uric acid level in acute myocardial infarction patients compared to the apparently healthy controls. These results indicate that there is a relationship between uric acid and AMI in the study population.
