Abstract

Excessive or poorly timed administration of anthelmintic medications in patients with a heavy burden of Ascaris lumbricoides may precipitate or aggravate acute mechanical intestinal obstruction by immobilizing a large number of worms, which can aggregate into an obstructing intraluminal bolus. This editorial discusses the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of Ascaris-related intestinal obstruction, emphasizing cautious anthelmintic use in children with heavy parasite burden, and the importance of deworming programs paired with appropriate clinical assessment and long-term sanitation improvements.
