Medical education curriculum reform for MBBS students
Medical education is the foundation of a strong health care system, and the quality of future doctors depends largely on the curriculum followed during undergraduate training. This editorial discusses the shift from traditional, theory-heavy MBBS curricula toward a modern, student-centered, competency-based model, highlighting emerging challenges such as antimicrobial resistance, pandemics, and AI in medicine.
Survival and mortality among patients admitted to intensive care unit of a tertiary level hospital of Bangladesh
Background: ICU survival and mortality rates vary widely across regions. Results: Among 237 ICU patients at PAHMCH, 40.9% were cured, while the overall mortality rate was 32.1% — lower than several other studies conducted worldwide.
Evaluation of changes in serum uric acid in a patient with acute myocardial infarction
Background: Serum uric acid changes correlate with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Results: Among 100 subjects, mean serum uric acid was significantly higher in AMI patients (7.91 mg/dl) than controls (3.68 mg/dl, p<0.001).
Relation of serum C3 level and ASO titre with clinical profile and immediate outcome of children with acute glomerulonephritis
Among 36 children with acute glomerulonephritis, elevated ASO titres were found in 77.8% and low serum C3 in 52.8%. Complete recovery occurred in 66.7% of cases; 2.8% died. Neither marker significantly predicted short-term outcome.
Revision with metaphyseal locking compression plate (MLCP) by compression technique for aseptic non-union of the shaft of femur combined with corticocancellous autogenus bone graft
A 55-year-old woman with aseptic non-union of the femoral shaft following prior nailing was successfully treated with revision MLCP and corticocancellous autogenous bone grafting, achieving excellent ASAMI bone and functional scores at 10-month follow-up.
Polycystic ovary syndrome and women’s health in resource-limited settings: a narrative review with insights from floodplain regions of Bangladesh
This narrative review synthesizes global evidence on PCOS, noting no population-based prevalence data exist for Bangladesh, and highlights compounded risks in floodplain (haor) communities from food insecurity, limited diagnostics, and cultural stigma — calling for integrated screening and context-adapted care.
